August 31 Back to Boston, Back to school
700mi + 100mi to visit the campus of Cornell, one of the Top 3 prettiest campuses of the States. Finished the last presentation this afternoon at 3pm; the longest summer I ever had. Just cannot wait to go back to school, the relaxing days, the remaining few summer time of Boston. Come to visit me, my new friends of the summer. It's time to settle down again; I miss the River Charles, the jogging, rowing, sailing, for the few sunny days of this summer ;-)
August 29 Test drive and my dream cars
Today I test drove the $1mn fuel cell vehicle, Equinox. It was so cooooool. I've done study on this next-generation vehicle for weeks; knowing all the magic tricks on paper though nvr hand touched it. I was "begging" my manager to give me a chance of driving it before I leave. Today the dream came true. The one i drove is the fourth generation, built on chevy's Equinox model. It looks similar to an automatic vehicle from exterior, even the hydrogen refill cap looks similar. But the driving feels so different! The acceleration reads your direction instantly, the huge difference from an automatic transmission. Auto transmission felt so dumb when bypassing another car. The propulsion system is quite, no noise like today's internal combustion engine. The panel is cool too, displaying the electricity generation and distribution all over the vehicle. A side note, driving on the oval track is awesome, feeling like on a racing track ;-)
I was constantly asked about my dream car. Frankfly speaking, i don't know. Automobile to me is more of a fashion industry to a lot of girls. The difference is, car is build on both exterior design and engineering performance. The engineering part decides how it feels when driving, which compliment the design for sure. I am a value consumer; all the cars I am interetested are based on my purchasing power and utility. But the following cars are my current dream cars without immediate utility (not suitable for long-distance travel and unpaved road conditions). All of them are of the same body style, a.k.a. roadster.
Pontiac Solstice 2007 Saturn Sky 2007
p.s., 最近打算去的地方,Rochester, Ithaca, the Thousand Islands, Acadia National Park, White Mountain, Ottawa, Montreal,Quebec City, San Francisco, Seattle, Florida,Alaska(!), Mexico, Cuba(Cuba, Cuba, Cuba!), Brazil, Argentina.
那天跟朋友一交流,才发现果真western food is much easier to prepare, esp. when prepare for a large group of guests ;-P 现在比较感兴趣的是fusion的cooking。
1/2 LB steak, sliced into two (thinner, easier to get the taste)
Mixed steak source: black pepper, salt, garlic, spices, oil, onion (boiught in grocery store)
Soy source (for the dark color)
Cabernet Sauvignion (any red wine will do; or changed to black coffee, another flavor)
Egg white (actually maybe better without)
Ideally should let the steak refrigrated for 8 hrs to let the flavor in. But for a quick dinner, 20min is enough. Then put the steak into oven on grill, temperature @ 300, time @ 10min for both sides. Now it comes out as 70% cooked! Perfect!
August 13 露营北密 - Camping in Upper PenisularIt was my first time camping. Heard too many complaints about camping from my friends before. Surprisingly, I became fond of camping the first time. We camped at the lakeshore of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. The first night at Munising (Lake Superior), breathtaking sunset, glattering starry starry sky, refreshing breeze, sleeping on the echo of tides. More importantly, both camping sites provided showers! Though there were thunders on the second night, the rains were actually very small. Camping, by tent or by RV, is a common holiday way of American families. They even show movie on a large screen on the camp site! Every camp spot has fire place; ppl lit fire at night, BBQing, and chatting. It is a cheap, natural, cozy way of spending a weekend with families and friends. In a word, I am "addicted" to camping now ;-)
Upper Penisular is said to be the most beautiful part of Michigan; Lake Superior is said to be the Miss Beauty of the Lake District. We started on Friday afternoon, 4hr drive on I-75, first stop at Mackinaw City which has the used-to-be longest 斜拉大桥 (now the world No. 1 is Shanghai Yangpu Bridge). Another two hours north, we arrived at Munising, the Pictured Rocks National Park. As the name indicates, the rocks or cliffs have a variety of colors and shapes, formed in the glacier period. The Sand Dune on top of cliff is ever-changing, amazing view with the rock-shore Lakeside. We headed south on Saturday night, camped at the lakeside of Petoskey, a cute small town on Route-31. On Sunday morning, departing from Petoskey, we visited Charlevoix and Traverse City on the east side of Lake Michigan. The last stop was Old Missions Penisular, where vineyard and chateaux populated. We stood at the 45th lantitude, half-way between Equator and the North Pole. Detailed travel journal will follow later ;-)

August 09 芝加哥游记 - ChicagoChicago is so far the U.S. city that I like most, even more than Boston. The feeling of a city is very subjective. I guess the lakeshore view caught my heart at first sight. Cities on water, either river, lake or seaside, always get extra score. But Chicago has more than the Lake Michigan. It bolsts as the U.S. City of Skyscrapers (such an important position in architecture), prides of one of the finest art gallery, abundant in all variety of museums, acts as the financial center of Mid-West US, also cradles two of the best universities in the world. Let me start with the City of Two Universities....
U. of Chicago - Cradle of Economists
If you major in business or economy, you must have heard of U. of Chicago, the dreamland for economists (esp. in academia). One of my managers is a GSB graduate and he once told me, "in terms of the nobel laurels, USA comes first, then Germany, followed by U of Chicago" This is the only university that ranks side by side with countries. The Wall of Fame in the GSB lobby is an obvious proof. Samuelson, Lucas, Stigler, Scholes... those frequent names keep popping out. Plus, some of them were pretty handsome on pictures, haha.
Kellogg School of Business, NWU - The Party School (also the best marketed)
No wonders that Kellogg has the reputation of party school. Cannot blame the students there; it's just becoz they have the best location to party. Situated right beside the Lake Michigan, sailing, cycling, sun bathing are all possibilities on a sunny afternoon. The doodles on lakeside rocks are fabulous. The most-appeared words are "love" and "engaged". The frequent colors are red and blue. The one word coming out of your mouth is "awesome". Undergrads carry the spirit of every college: young, passionate, talented, and... disobeying, the tendancy to violate all rules. Interesting to know, the school is named after the cereal company Kellogg. Kellogg has the reputation in marketing. I am sure it is actually. Looking around of the B-school rankings, Kellogg always rank No. 1 or at least on the top 5 list. It practices the skills in classroom to recruiters, to magazines, to prospect students.
The Art Insititute of Chicago
One of the best art gallaries in the States. It collects a huge bunch of Renoir and other impressionism and post-impressionism. As I said before, the real fine collection of a US art gallery is in modern art, e.g., cubism, surrealism, pop art etc. Photography is the shining point of the Art Insistute. Jeff Wall was on exhibition. Contemporary photographists always focus in the common people, common life into their works. That's what we call art is from life, but also on top it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The wall-size print, the light casting, the angle of the camera, all put together the impressive image on Jeff Wall.
Architecture tour on boat
This is almost a must-do tourist thing for Chicago. Chicago is the origin of skyscrapers, thanks to the fire in 1864 (?). Chicagoese had to rebuild the city. The boat guide tried to explain each landmark building along the Chicago River. "Form following Function" was basically what he tried to convey. However, I didn't see much of it. One interesting phenomina of the building is, most of them had no windows facing the river, becoz it used to be a dirty place (the sewage of the city). As a result of one mayor's efforts to turning around the river bank, buildings started to "embrace" the river. Similar to the Suzhou River in Shanghai. Some buildings even re-opened windows on the riverside walls. A regulation was inforced as well, that every developer should build a river walk whenever a new building being developed. Under mutual efforts, nowadays Chicago River has become a place to walk, to jog, to cycle, to just sit by or taking a sun bath. Sears Tower still claims to be the highest building in the world, by the body itself (excluding the thunder cod), beating the twin tower in Malaysia. To me, it's meaningless to compete for the highest building in the world. Hope our city planners in BJ can share the same view. When skyscropers and glass walls being abandoned in today's architecture trend (too energy-consuming), our cities are picking up the outdated fashion and start building the energy-thirsty architectures.
Michigan Avenue and Millenium Park
Michigan Avenue is the Artery of Chicago. Flagship shops, hotels, restaurants, and above all, the Millenium Park, the park that I've been walked around three times during my visit. The stainless steel ball is the symbol of Chicago scuplture. It reflects all famous buildings in Chicago. There is a fountain with two huge screen cubics. Kids are playing in the fountain, bands on performance on weekend, toursits sit on the bench for a rest. It is very modernly designed, esp. the sculptures, a reflection of the old-school manufacturing and mining center.
Navy Pier - too commercial, though it has a nice port view. But a must-see on the tourist list anyway. Last but not least, thanks a lot to the SEM sweetheart, a.k.a. He Zhiguo and Jiang Ren'na. The sweetest couple I've visited in the States; the warmest decorated apt I've been to. Blessings...
August 07 Anti-China Sentiment: AFL-CIO Presidential Forum
On tonight's MSNBC, the AFL-CIO Presidential Forum, a strong anti-China sentiment can be easily noticed. No wonder coz the audience, the largest in early campaign season i.e. 15,000 families, and the location, Chicago - the heart of Mid-West, the heart of Manufacturing America. What does Manufacturing America mean to you? Deserted Cleveland, bankrupt metal mines, struggling auto makers, and the most powerful unions in the world. Looking around the Soldier Field Stadium, you can feel that, blue-collar workers, Yes, 15,000 of them; there's no social manners as we saw on the CNN debate in New Hampshire. Instead, there're whistles, applauses, and Sh....ss. You know what's on their mind, what they care, what they fear. And China, is definitely one of the stepgoats. No wonders the endless news about fake toothpaste, poisonous toys, dangerous tires from "Made-in-China". Actually, I feel most uncomfortable each time in class people mention that China as the World Manufacturing Center. Frankly speaking, I don't feel proud of that. I would rather people saying China as the World Innovation Center, the cutting-edge Technology Center, the Environmental Role Model. Looking at China now, we're putting ourselves on the edge of urgency: rising inflation, shaky social welfare, poverty, inequality, pollution. Above all, the loss of social value, the criteria of distinguishing right Vs. wrong.
No matter how critical I am toward status quo in China; I will still be on the defensive side when arguing with my fellow classmates. There are things we can choose; there are things we cannot choose. Nationality, family, race, gendre are those we are given, or gifted with. I appreciate the applause AFL-CIO audience gave to the newly-citizen Argentinean worker; but I would never choose to change mine. Will you change your Mom and Dad because another family is wealthier?

A must see movie. The best of the Bourne Trilogy. The best movie of the summer. From the first minute in the movie till the end, your heart will be beating in the rythm of the chasing and anti-assassination. I nvr thought Matt Damen is handsome; but he is definitely talented and born to be acting Jason Bourne. Another drop-out of Harvard (maybe I should consider quitting too, at least saving two terms' tuition, haha) Must see in cinema, wide screen, stereo sound, and funny audience reaction. It seems common Americans have long be educated by this individual heroism, e.g., 24 hours. People will high five when Jason Bourne slashed another attempted assassination.
Other films seen this summer include Spider Man 3 and Harry Porter 5. Both so-so. Becoming Jane could be a light movie. I like Austen's Pride and Prejudice, esp. the BBC mini-series. Collin Firth is the perfect candidate for acting Mr. Darcy, and his authentic British accent gives him extra score. Surprising Becoming Jane wasn't found yesterday; maybe it's a small movie and not every theater willing to invest in the first week.
