July 31
July 30 3000 Miles in less than 1.5 monthsPretty impressive; kinda surpirsed myself: 3,000 miles in less than 1.5 months. Another 600mi this weekend. Driving becomes a routine of my daily life and long-distance driving, normally 2-4hr one way, is the neccessity of my weekend trip. This is one great part I like this country, such an infrastructure, hardly getting lost on the highway as long as you take the right direction. Wondering when China could develop the same infrastructure connecting coastal to interior, north to south. But the critical issue is not the hardward (roads), but the software (driver behavior).
Chicago is amazing. Fabulous lake life; Spectacular architecture; Beautiful campus of the two renowned universities; vibrant economy; properous tourism; lovely summer weather; world-class art museum. In one word, this is the city I feel greater (prettier) than any other US cities, even better than Boston. The only issue of living in Chicago is this Windy City locates in the middle of nowhere, or ppl call it Midwest; hard to find huge networks. That's another story. Will update the tour shortly ;-) July 26 Ride & DriveToday, our interns were offer the chance to drive several new models. The first one I drove was Chevy 2007 HHR, pretty entry-level; the second a Saturn Aura, the third Saturn Sky sports coupe, the fourth Cardillac STS, and lastly the 2008 Corvette. I wished I could have tried more cars but I had a meeting with a director in b/w, unfortunately. Surprisingly, I felt much better driving a German-made car than all the cars I drove today, even though GM bolsting as one of the best powertrain makers in the world. Maybe I am not that comfortable driving an automatic (don't laugh at me); I just didn't know where to put my left foot ;-P And the automatic transmission feels not like my feet, not as perfect contral as a stick. Plus most of the cars I drove are not GM's high-end, except for the Cardillac and Corvette. These two are really for the money. The STS feels like a CAR , pretty comparable to my bug (Germans really good at making cars, so much better control and smooth transmissions). The Saturn Sky I drove was a stick, very stiff transmission. But the Corvette and STS are pretty cool, both keyless start and perfect control. GM does have several coool cars, Saturn Solstice is one, super cute.
July 23 Democratic Debate - one of its first kindDemocratic Debate on CNN tonight again. I was so obsessed with the heated debates that I had to give up my tennis session. Tonight a new form was introduced; that is, people asked the candidates questions by uploading their video to youtube.com. Though I have been long time a critic of the so-called American democracy, I have to admit that U.S.A. has the highest level of democracy, if not in the absolute level. Technology has changed the landscape, has altered the way we live, the channel we voice out our opions and the sources we get information. The topics are always around the following:
1. Iraq war: the obvious conflict of opinions b/w democrats and republican. "are you telling me that our soldiers are dying in vain like we did in the Vietnam war?" that's a tough question to handle. Soldiers are supposed to take orders not to question orders. Can political decision determine the justice of soldiers' mission? When we depart, we thought that we fight to protect my home country; when we're dying in the middle of desert, we are told that we're dying for vain. I am definitely against any war in any form; but story has the other version from the soldiers' perspective. To me, this is a dilemma; that's why, I will not be a soldier by any means. And I don't think millitary is the cause for anyone who aspire to keep his/her independance thoughts
2. Healthcare: universal coverage is the key card Democratic candidates play in 2008 presidential campaign. Diabetes (obesity) were mentioned several times tonight. I feel so proud that I've been part of the anti-diabetes campaign in my previous intern. Though pharma companies in the end still target at earning money, the cause they're doing does make a difference and make it better for people's lives. The whole healthcare is a typical capitalist example of the States. This business model works well so far, for pharm companies, for managed care organizations, for individuals as well. U.S.A. is the only country in the world that can still sustain billions of billions investment in R&D for future recipes to release people's pain. Without the pricing autonomy, without the cheese fat premium, who's gonna undertake the innovation pain? That's the challenges for auto industry. The Big Three have to invest billions of $$ in next generation vehicles, although suffering from billions of $$ losses each year. Everyone is betting on the next generation, the technology breakthrough. But without the cash flow, is this investment sustainable? How to turn this from a gamble to an investment?
3. Same-sex marriage: on this point, democrats and republican deviate. That's how my manager told me, to him is not democrat Vs. republican, but conservative Vs. liberal. Looking through the republican candidate summary, none of them support same-sex marriage. In democrats, more diversity in stances. It's a challenging question for those religious candidates, e.g., Obama (mormon). Interesting comments came from Dodd, who have two daughters. He said he would respect his daughters' sexual orientation, but he wouldn't accept the marriage. Same came from Edwards, who said that his wife supports same-sex marriage but he doesn't. The point here is not which stance those candidates take, but how boldly/ truthfully they express their stance. I was worrying that those candidates may care about the votes from LGBT constituency thus go for the "yes". It turns out to be a diversity (but one can also argue the majority of contituency may be conservative too). Anyway, I appreciate the way people express their opinions on highly controversial topics. We can approach closer to the truth only if we get the debates along the way
4. Taxation: clearly democrats and republican differ, the former goes for high taxation while the latter for tax cuts. Generally speaking, wealthy people prefer tax cut while poor perfer high tax (therefore better social welfare system). In that sense, republican candidates should be able to raise much more funds than their democrat counterparts; but the figures tell the opposite story, weird
Apart from the above, some interesting trivia found while searching on their backgrounds:
1. Follow the money: presidential campaign in the end is a competition on funding. Without enough funds to spend, your charisma, your political ambition are all in vain (this time, real vain). And the money each candidate raises should be positively related to their popularity. That's true for democrats, Hilary Clinton leads ahead of Obama, followed by Edwards. Gore nvr presents in any of these TV live shows, but his popularity still ranks the third. Looking at the republican side, the total amount is not comparable to democrats, plus the amount of money doesn't directly link to the candidate's popularity. Mitt Romney is the "richest" guy in republican group. On his donator list, there're CEOs of those renowned companies, e.g., Meg Whitman (eBay), David Neeleman (Jet Blue), and Paul Otellini (Intel). Contrarily, his popularity ranking is very low (9%, the 4th)
2. Ivy League Club: haha, proud of Harvard brand now. Both Obama and Romney are Harvard alumni, who are both my favorites. Romney also comes from a legendary family as well; his father was a three-term governor of Michigan. Romney himself was the governor of Massachusetts. And his answers in one of the debates left an impressive memory to me too. When asked to introduce themselves, Romney said "I am a husband, a father, a son, and a neighbor" That's a very smart opening to win over constituency by making them feel he was one of them
There are just too many to say about this candidacy debate and all the topics under discussion and each candidate backgrounds/political stance. Lucky to be here during the election year. I gradually feel the secret of powerful Amreica resides in its system; but if that's just about the system, why other countries (maybe a new and small country) cannot copy it and follow the fast track of development? Why a country of no culture, or too many cutlures, can develop this consensus of democracy? I don't know the answers; worse is, the more I think, the more question marks I've got.
July 12 Barnes Foundation
The Joy of Life 可惜那副画作被借走,而我比较喜欢的是他的the Music Class,French window in Nice, Three Sisters, 还有Barnes Gallery墙上巨大的the Dance
July 08 Federer - Fifth Title at Wimbledon!
Classical match against Nadal again, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2
Nadal seems very unhappy (still like a kid, but there's a long way in front of him). Nadal already grew a lot, esp. on grass court. It's obvious he was very depressed of losing the game in the last set. But Rodger is Rodger, another record in Wimbledon. I always think he is good-looking in white. He was also very excited to tears after the match. It's so cute that he mentioned this championship with the lost one in Roland Garros with that cute sound and gesture. Every audience understood and laughed, haha. Great moment.
三天后再次day trip to NYC,主要目的一是去MOMA,一是看Macy's Fireworks on Independence Day。
Teriyaki Tilapia Fillet by oven:
这个实在是太方便了,适合我这种懒人 July 02 香港回归10周年 - 10th Anniversary of the Return of HK
都信奉勤劳致富,every dog has his day
一直佩服英国人在管理殖民地上的高招,他们总是善于以夷治夷,而且知道how to create an internal conflict to better control both sides
譬如Parkistan and India, Hong Kong and China, North and South Germany
Mainstream voice is always in the hand of a few people. So is China, US, Hong Kong, and anywhere else in the world
当年“逼”江core说出三个经典词(too young, too simple, sometimes naive)的张宝华就说
July 01 West Point Academy - Harder truth Vs. Easier wrong"Encourage us in our endeavor to live above the common level of life. Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never to be content with a half truth when the whole truth can be won. " - Cadet Prayer
Air Force Academy
Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong
西点有一所chapel,只为graduates/alumni提供婚庆服务。
