Für Elise - My first piano practice melody

I know what are the priorities in life; but I am also the person always go from the bottom. I know I need to read cases for tomorrow, prepare for upcoming interviews, buy the hassel light switch. But I did none of them, instead spending the whole afternoon on my first piano lesson/practice. Don't laugh at my silliness. I am just as spontaneous as I sometimes cannot believe myself. I would spend hours on blog writing, gym excercises, idling, but not reading cases. I thought life here in HBS meant to be like this, doing whatever you may not have time to do before and after.

I suddenly fell like playing Für Elise  the night of Oscar. And there happen to be a piano at McColluch loungh. I downloaded the scores online, booked Atsushi's time, and all set! Keyboard is easier than I thought, at least all the notes are fixed, unlike stringed instrument. And my Guzheng helps me little bit in the cooperation of left- and right- hands. The chords are similar across all instrument. Having said that, I am still a clumsy piano player and just learn very little part of it, the challenging parts are right there on next pages. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and I gotta make the best out of the piano (very likely I won't have time and "asset" to learn after HBS, strong enough execuse har?)

    79th Oscar Night

    the
The Departed won the best picture on 79th Oscar. It was scripted based on the same story of HK movie Wu Jian Dao (the Infernal Affairs). Below is a comment from IMDB by Peaceterrorist on the comparison of these two movies, very interesting:

I really wanted to watch this movie without thinking about the infernal affairs trilogy (scores:10, 9, 7) but I couldn't do it. I knew too much going into the film and it kind of lessens the impact of the film (considering it is a remake, of course). Infernal
Infernal affairs was shorter, sharper and slightly more suspenseful in my view. Plus I felt Matt damon's character was too one sided when compared with infernal affairs more ambiguous one which led to less of an emotional impact in certain scenes, shall we say (in comparison). And so on, I don't want to complain too much cause, like I said before I loved the heck out of this movie.
The dialogue in The departed is incredibly witty, sharp and downright hilarious (especially with Jack on screen) aided by the acting powerhouses on display, and this list goes on (can't be bothered to type more, lol).
So the bottom line is, try to watch this movie as a stand alone, don't compare like I have and you'll get more enjoyment out of it. I've got a feeling though, the more I watch the Departed the better it'll get (just like infernal affairs 2, by the way).

This is my first time see live Oscar evening. It was so loooooong. Started at 8pm EST; I thought I was late when I got back home at 9:30pm, but only to find it endless. I stayed till 11:30pm and it seemed still quite some little golden oscars left on shelf. I was so sleepy and didn't make to the announcement of Best Actor/Actress ;-P However, few of this year's movies I have seen. The only movie I saw in theatre in the U.S. was Nicolas Cage's World Trade Centre in NJ invited by Ye Li ;-)  Of the recent films I saw, my favorates are Ice Age 2 (I have watched three times ;-P ), Crazy Stone (爆笑), the Italian Job (though old), Pride and Prejudice (BBC version), and Little Women (classic). Oh, right, and Shrek 4 in Universal Studio, the "spittal", hahahaha

    Happy Birthday to myself

    Happy Birthday, hiahia

Thank you all that came to my B-day dinner, Matt, Mark, Brian, Haining, Anny, Tom, Michaela, and Cynthia; and those who couldn't come but your blessings were as warm as always. It is always a dilemma on B-day. I hate to be greeted by the question "how old are you?". Really nth to celebrate at this age; but I am not telling you anyhow ;-P A few times I almost got trapped in the tricky question "which year of animal were you born?" haha, the same trick I have used before. I like the number 18, 24 and 27. If Tan Yonglin claims to be 25-yrs-old every year, I must be younger than him, right? Logically correct, hiahia. On the hand, I would feel upset if I spend my B-day alone. As a result, I have to "celebrate" it without facing the fact that I am getting one year mature. Look it from the positive side, isn't it a good execuse to have friends together? Gosh, I am bsing so much, thanks to Haining who blamed my laziness of not writing anything for my birthday.

The most recent B-day I remember was in Shanghai two years ago. At that time, still a lot of good friends around; now people have scatter all around, chasing their own dreams in BJ, in CD, in SH, and in Europe. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture the other at Koreana, though I brought my camera with me (just feel so shamed taking picture at this age, hehe). Thus I have to post the picture I took in Shanghai, good memories flooding back....

CNY - first skiing in the States

    FirstFirst
First Chinese New Year (CNY) spent w/o families. I went skiing in Pats Peak (NH) as a new year adventure for myself. Pats Peak Ski resort is about 1.5hr drive from campus, ideally for a day-trip. I only skiied 2-3 times before in China, one indoor in SH and two in BJ with man-made snows. Last Wendesday there was a huge snow in New England, perfect time for skiing in the real snow. More luckily, Gideon, a friend organizing this ski trip, used to be a ski coach in Yabuli! I've got personalized one-on-one coaching! It feels so different in Pats Peak than my previous experience in China: (1) much less people, meaning you don't have to "fight" to get the rentals nor do you need to queue in long line to get on the cable car; (2) much more trails for various levels, even the green level (for beginners) has 5-7 trails; (3) staffs are more professional and customize the ski board to each customer (in BJ, you have to really squeeze to get one, not to speak the customized services). To sum it up, less crowd brings better services; and larger spaces gives more choices. 人少服务好, 地大选择多. Imagine one day we have only 300MM population in China, our GDP per capita will quadruple to over $5,000, catching up to the 1st tier countries in the world ;-)

CNY eve: getting my car out

    snow
Snow is beautiful; but getting your car stuck in the ice-snow is nth but...memoriable. After three days of the Boston's biggest snow this year, I suddenly found my car, which parked on the street, got buried in 10-inch ice, hard-rock ice. All my friends here are laughing at my laziness and suggested me to wait till spring. Are you guys kidding me? Waiting till spring? I consulted all people that I knew could have experience in cold area like Boston and got a list to-do:
    1. Don't warm  your car before scratch the ice off the windshield
    2. Clear your exhaust pipe, making sure it is not blocked (for your own safety)
    3. Buy a metal shovel, not a plastic one (it took us three places to finally get one in Home Deposit. Funny thing is, the minute I entered the shop, everyone had a metal shovel in his shopping cart. haha, so not only me is that lazy and ignorant)
    4. Prepare a hammer as well. You may need it to clear the ice around the tires. We had to "trade" our shovel with another's hammer down the road.
    5. Last but not the least, you need PEOPLE. Yes, manpower. Now I understand why they say man"power". The more the powerful. In the end, three guys helped me push the car out of the ice. Without the external forces, it is by no means to get the car out.
    6. Next time in time of snow, make sure to move your car as soon as the snow stops

To the 5th point, I would give special thanks to Manish, who helped me through the whole endeavor this afternoon. I was thinking of doing it myself, as some of my female friends did the same thing themselves before. And we all supposed to be independant strong HBS woman. However, when I got to the car, I know it's mission impossible for me alone. I would nvr ever did the same stupid thing again; but having this "exercises" this afternoon is indeed a memorable experience in the U.S. Life nvr complete without flaws or regrets ;-)
